Kind Words From Our Dear Interns...
Words from our recent graduates on our Virtual Internship of 3 modules: (1)Neuro-Optometric Rehabilitation; (2) Behavioral and Developmental Optometry; (3) Sports Vision
We are grateful for your kind words and encouragement. We are wishing you all the success!
When we started our internship at VSI, we got to know Dr. Charlie Ho and Dr. Maia Uy. They shared their aspirations regarding the field of Optometry in the Philippines. We were having lectures from either Dr. Ho or Dr. Uy. They taught us invaluable knowledge about Optometry--the importance of neuroplasticity, vision therapy, and many more.
During workshop, we were given the chance to actually use devices that we can only see in books or in the internet. We were taught how to use these devices as well as their importance and purposes. I find these workshops really helpful. It can help us— interns—be more aware in the latest trends and technologies in optometry.
We also had the chance to meet a neuro patient. He told us his story and how the VSI helped him. He gave us words of encouragement; told us that we can make our dreams of becoming a doctor come true, and we can help many lives just like how Dr. Charlie and Dr. Maia helped him. It was a really good experience. From that, I became more determined. We may experience difficulties now, but I know that it will be worth it. I really enjoyed our duty in VSI. The doctors and their employees are really kind and helpful. It is a really good experience. I am very grateful to them for sharing their knowledge and expertise with us.

Our duty in Vision Science Institute left me with fruitful knowledge and
understanding regarding Vision Therapy. One of the learnings that struck me the most is
the quote “Optometry is Neuroscience”. At school we are taught to address the refractive
needs of our clients by giving spectacle correction or contact lens, while in Vision Science
Institute we are taught to go beyond the eye. Vision system is composed of the eye and the
brain. With this we must address not just the afferent pathway but also the efferent
pathway.
Dr. Charlie embedded to us that “Sports Vision is the foundation of all optometry
sub-specialty”. In Vision Science Institute they cater not just athletes but also patients with
strabismus, amblyopia, ADD & ADHD, autism and Developmental Delay, Convergence
Insufficiency and Diplopia, and CVA (Stroke) patients. These diseases and disorders need
individual, specialized, and specific goal-oriented therapy in order to be successful.
Dr. Maia presented the cases she handled at Vision Science Institute. While she
presented her cases I cannot help but be inspired on how the optometrists can improve not
just the error of refraction of a client but also their quality of life. All of her patients gained
self-confidence after completing the therapy because their eyes are now aligned, and they
can see better. This got me thinking that I do not want to be an optometrist who will spend
his years doing ONLY refraction. I want to continue learning and growing as a professional.
I do not want to just improve the sight of the patient but also their vision for improving the
vision can lead to improvement of their quality of life.
My internship in Vision Science Institute opened a new world for me. I want to
pursue vision therapy. I want to reach my full potential as an optometrist. I am thankful for
all the learnings from Dr. Charlie, Dr. Maia, and Sir Mark. I am forever grateful for the
opportunity to be a part of the internship program of Vision Science Institute. This is not
the last time that I will enter their clinic.
Ronald
During my stay in Vision Science Institute I was awakened by the path of the
Association's where taking its journey. Their mission and vision has a goal of what Optometrists
population should do and they do not know that there are plenty of services that we can offer
and actually perform to cater patients who is necessary for that examination. And that is where
sub-specialization enters to the Optometry world.
VSI lets us feel, hear and see the equipment they have and explained it to us the
principle behind those devices. And I felt privilege to experience in using the equipment that I
normally saw in internet or books. The two weeks internship experience here in VSI, it was
really extraordinary. I gained new knowledge, enhanced my skills, acquired inspiration, and
experienced of seeing actual patient examination and management. I treated the vicinity as my
second home because I'm in the place where I'm sure that I am passionate in my future
profession. And it is truly a wide spectrum of work in which an Optometry can do to provide
that visual demands.
To the members of Vision Science Institute, in behalf of the MCU-College of Optometry
1 st Batch would like to thank you for sharing your knowledge and expertise during our
internship. The encouragement that you have given to us, I am more motivated to excel on this
profession. Our great experienced at VSI was unforgettable and inspirable, more power and
God bless!
Kyle
Dr. Maia prepared a lecture about special cases they handled in their clinic. I
felt Dr. Maia’s passion in handling her patients, and also I was inspired by her. Everything
we do, we must put our heart on them or on it. She said we must be passionate on the path
we chose to be able to be successful.
One of my unforgettable moments in VSI is when Dr. Charlie introduced us to Mr. Simon
who is a stroke survivor patient and Mr. Simon to talked to us about his journey as a stroke
survivor. I cried because I felt Mr. Simon how difficult it was to had a Hemorrhagic stroke. I
saw how thankful and happy he was after he undergone Vision Therapy at VSI.
It was so inspiring that through his testimony, we still have a chance and hope in
this world despite anything else especially if we have strong faith in God. I was hoping that
in the future I can serve my patient with a smile on their faces and face the world without
worries. Then, we were lucky to had a photo opportunity with Dr. Charlie, Dr. Maia and Mr.
Simon with his wife.
My internship at VSI, we had fun and enjoyed the training and workshops. We
learned a lot from Dr. Charlie and Dr. Maia about their discussions about Sports Vision,
Pediatric Optometry and Neuro-Optometric Rehabilitation. We also learned how to handle
to the patient with a heart as if they were part of your family. And most especially how to
be a the best and successful optometrist in the future.
Alianna
The doctors and staff of the institution are very friendly and accommodating. They
gave us a tour around the building. There were rooms for different types of patients. We
were also given a chance to see a variety of rehabilitation equipment.
Our duty was very fun and insightful. Besides having fruitful lectures, the activities
they had us done were both for education and entertainment. The equipment were
available for us to use and they would allow us to explore the devices around the clinic.
So far, VSI has offered us great knowledge. The lecturers and workshops given by
Dr. Maia and Dr. Charlie have really caught my attention. And to be honest, the experience
in VSI has sparked my interest in sports vision and rehabilitation. As Dr. Charlie said to us
on our first day, the field of Optometry is very wide, and that Optometrists can offer so
much more than just glasses. I remember Dr. Charlie ended the lecture with a quote saying
“I am an Optometrist, and that is enough reason for me to be proud” With this, I realized
that as future doctors, we have 2 paths to choose from; We can either go the traditional
way of Optometry or We can be involved in specialty areas to offer more variety of service
to the community. But whatever choice we make we should be able to uphold the proper
skills to provide quality services to our patients.
Bernadette
Our internship in VSI like learning about Sports Vision, Vision Therapy and in Neuro-
Optometry. I am excited on what we are about to learn there in VSI. They are encouraging us to
learn about Vision Therapy, one thing that they always say on their lecture on our first week,
when a patient has strabismus it is not about the eye muscle is the problem it is the brain
(neuroplasticity). At first, we were overwhelmed on the equipment available in their institute
and some of them are not available in school.
Dr. Maia presented some of her patient cases that was so inspiring for us students. My
unforgettable moment was when Sir Russ who was a stroke survivor gave a testimony in
person, an American who got a stroke attack while he was staying at a hotel and he was
unconscious for almost 8 hours before he called for some help outside his hotel room. He told
us that he is thankful for Dr. Charlie and Dr. Maia for what improvements that he got while he
had been training there in VSI. We think it’s God’s will that he would go up to our lecture room
after their heart to heart talk with Dr. Charlie to give us some inspiration to pursue Vision
Therapy.
As future optometrist, I am now inspired to explore sub specialties in Optometry rather
than just doing refraction at an Optical Clinic. I can do Visual Therapy for Amblyopia, Strabismus
or about Neuro-Optometry.
Maria
On one week of our intership in Vision Science Institute, I have learned a lot of things in
Optometry practice specifically a lot on sports vision and Neuro - Optometry, as Dr. Maia Uy as well as
Dr. Chalie Ho taught us a lot of this special fields, we now fully appreciate what Optometrist are capable
of in different fields, we were not contented on just giving the best prescription glasses with the best
acuity provided, but we make sure that the three components of vision are intact, namely visual
integrity, visual efficiency and visual information processing, these were the fundamentals of
wholesome management given to each patient that we as Optometrist were suppose to check and
rehabilitate if ever the patient has problem on either area.
As we continue our internship here at vision science institute I hope that we will able to acquire
the skills and knowledge that we will need in our future practice. This different instruments and devices
will help us future Optometrist to properly diagnosed and properly treat as well as rehabilitate each and
every patient that we may encounter on our future practice, we interns were amazed on how advance
their devices are, which we can use and handled here at vision science institute with the supervision of
their trainers especially on sports vision clinic, we were also enlighten by different athletes that enable
to train here at vision science institute as well as how well did their game improve in comparison with
their previous performance, once they involve visual and physical training they integrate and increase
their not only their visual spatial skills but it involves their peripheral awareness, reaction time and visual
processing input that turns into positive response or movement in relevance to each and every
situation. In summary I was impressed and motivated in our internship site in the span of 1 week I had
learn so much from our preceptors.
Aldwin
I am thankful for this site that we had the opportunity to use some of the devices that
we only see in books and in discussions because the experience is really different when we are
able to use it on the actual setting rather than reading the procedures by the book without the
instruments in front of us. We are fortunate to experience the state of the art equipment.
The center makes sure that the equipment that they use the latest technology in order
to provide the best services to their patients. Aside from the facilities, the people in the clinic
are also very accommodating and shared their knowledge to us regarding the different
practices and procedures. This internship also made me realize that optometrists are not
confined to refraction alone but we have the ability to change lives through vision therapy and
rehabilitation. We are also blessed that during our internship we have heard an actual
testimony from a patient who has survived a stroke and returned to his functioning where he
can do his activities of daily living through the help of neuro-optometry. From this, it has made
me realize that through our profession we can give hope to those downhearted by their
conditions. I also stand with what Dr. Charlie said that we are only instruments of God to help
other people and what Dr. Maia shared that we have a purpose on why we are here in this
field. In optometry, science and passion goes hand in hand, and in the management of patients,
knowledge and skills are needed but most importantly we should have the heart to help and
care for our patient.
In this institute, I am encouraged to explore more of what optometry has to offer aside
from refraction and also to give hope to those who have problems in vision.

For me, having an experience in this kind of institute is a great opportunity for us interns
because this center runs a full scope optometry practice that do hands-on training in the
different sub-specialty areas. It is equipped with a high class and international instruments
that enables it to provide non-medical and non-surgical interventions to most of their
patients.
I’m glad to gain more knowledge and skills in this internship site. It was so good and the
discussions and lectures was so fruitful and informative. I’m looking forward to discover
many clinical wisdom in assessing and giving the proper management and help patients to
improve their overall quality life.
My Internship in Vision Science Institute was good and I have learned a lot more about
vision therapy, sports vision, neuro-vision rehabilitation, sports neurology, neuro skills
enhancement and many more. My first week of duty in VSI was so overwhelming, I was so
amazed with the high technology equipment and devices in their clinic.
Zion
We had the opportunity to discover and try different instruments that can be used as a test
or therapy to a wide range of patients. I had fun while learning what are those for. In my
internship in VSI, It came to me that specializing in Optometry doesn’t just give you the
opportunity to earn more but also will let you help more patients and has the power to change
their lives in a way that no one else could.
Niña
My rotation at Vision Science Institute was short but I learned a lot. Doc Charlie and
Doc Maia taught us a lot that is not taught at our school. They let us experience using some of
their instruments and do workshops. They even let us handle some of their patients. Being at
VSI helps us see that we can do more than just eye glasses that we can also change lives by
doing vision therapy. Doc Maia showed us the patients testimony on how vision therapy
improved their lives, it makes us feel that there are so much more we can do as future
optometrist. Being able to help someone have their confidence was very fulfilling. That the
impact of our professions to others are significantly good.
Having experienced being intern at VSI was such a fun experience. This would really
help us into shaping our future. That help us see if we wanted Vision Therapy as our future
specialization. Being at VSI showed us a glimpse of reality if we choose Vision Therapy as our
specialization.
Cyrille
Vision Science Institute made me realize that our role as an optometrist doesn’t stop at
20/20. Even though we are able to give the best frame and even the best lenses to a certain
person, it’ll always be not enough. It is our role as an optometrist to give the best eye care to
our patients. And Vision Science Institute made us realize that.
Being in the center for weeks, we enjoyed a lot of things. It was like a big playground of
new learning for all of us. Seeing new equipment really made us excited every time we’ll go
there. There’s a lot of things taught in VSI that only experiences was built of. We learned to use
different equipment that we only encountered at the said center.
VSI not only taught us new knowledge but also the application of situations in real life. It
helped us realize what we are capable of doing and what more can we do. It’s like were brought
out of the box to discover more of what an optometrist can do – to change people’s lives.
Maria
There are lot of things that I’ve learned in this site. We gained new knowledge on
their instruments which are not found in our school. We also learned about neuroplasticity.
Our preceptors showed us some of the case study that they handle with conditions
like strabismus, amblyopia and stroke patients. Those things inspired us not only in our
practice, but to love our profession that those help that we gave to our patients are
priceless.
I’ve also learned more about sports vision and vision therapy. The history of sports
in the Philippines started in 1996. The role of optometrist for the athletes is to see clearly,
think better and most important is perform faster training. Indeed, optometrist play a big
role in the life of an athlete and it is beyond the vision.
Portia
As an intern, it’s very exciting and refreshing to experience a new side of optometry
that is very different and unique. I was exposed to a lot of instruments that are not present
at school. My stay at VSI taught me that vision is not entirely dependent on the state of the
eye but is also affected by neurological aspects as well.
I learned that several conditions can be addressed by training the brain. I also
learned that patients with neurological conditions can also regain most of their bodily
functions by utilizing the concept of neuroplasticity. As optometrists, we could help these
kinds of patients through therapy to improve their quality of life.
I also learned the role of optometrists in the life of an athlete. We have a significant
role as health care providers in which we should address the visual needs of an athlete. An
optometrist also has a wide range of tools and methods to help train an athlete to help and
improve his/her visual skills which in turn will improve an athlete’s performance.
John
Being an intern to Vision Science Institute is a privileged for me. It gave me an
opportunity to learn many things as well as we experienced good times we spent here. It will
surely help in our future career in every patient we will handle. I had so much gratitude to the
doctors as well with the staffs who assisted us since first day one up to our last duty.
Dr. Charlie Ho and I learned that vision therapy work through theory of neuroplasticity.
The brain plasticity is the ability of the brain to change throughout an individual’s life. Athlete
sport skill develop on its own cycle. It can be constant training by doing repetition or skills
acquired, learned or developed.
Dr. Mai presented their special cases and we were amaze how they can truly help
people who are suffering with different eye conditions. We also had a heart-to-heart sharing
regarding struggles in life. We were touched how Dr. Maia and Dr. Charlie inspire and motivate
the patients. Optometry is truly a life changing.
Ara
In VSI they have 3 specialty areas such as Sports Vision, Neuro-Optometry and Pediatric
and Behavioral Optometry. They have a lot of instruments that are helpful for rehabilitation
and enhancement of the skills not only the athletes, but also for stroke, brain injury and
behavioral patients.
This is a great opportunity to experience the different instruments and they explained
the purpose and guide us on how to use those instruments. This is very helpful for us to be
familiarize to those instruments that we’ve never been tried. This enlightened my mind that we
can do more as an Optometrist not only refraction we can help those patients who are hopeless
and burden because of their condition through vision therapy and rehabilitation. We can
change their lives. It’s not about the money it’s about the passion to help them to improve their
quality of life.
Hazel
Doc Charlie and Doc Maia taught us about vision as well as the brain: how the information
transmit to the brain. The main focus topic was the neuroplasticity. Although I had a little
background about it but the discussion gave me more information. We did also some workshop
that enhance our memory and our skills. Some of the instruments were new to me and I was so
happy because it really worked for me. They also accommodate our questions and our
suggestion towards every topic.
To sum up of my experience on Vision Science Institute, it was really fun having instructors who
are very open to us. The knowledge gained as well as the correction gave us lessons for us to
strive to learn even more. I was also inspired to have my sub specialization in the future if God
may allow, not because of the benefit financially but also for myself and for the enhancement
of the profession.
Angelica
Our duty at VSI will be very memorable for me, because of all the activities and
workshops we have experience at VSI, it was really fun and I felt that I was only playing but
at the same time learning. Dr. Maia did mentioned that it is more than the eye, we have to
go beyond and mainly training the eye and the brain.
I was also inspired by Dr. Maia’s achievements because we had the same reason on
why I took Optometry, I’m here just for the sake to graduate, but knowing that I could do
more and I could achieve more and fulfill the patients need not just by giving out
prescriptions but also help with their quality of life, it pushed me to continue learning
about the different specialize areas in Optometry with passion.
VSI opened new knowledge for me to gain and achieved in the future. VSI was a step
forward for me to get where I need to go, and I am very blessed to be able to experience all
of that at VSI even though our time there was very short, with the short time span, I already
learned a lot and I am thankful for Dr. Maia and Dr. Charlie for that. I am sure that they
could inspire more students with their achievements.
Kathleen
The preceptors are very accommodating they answers our questions in a way that we will
understand.
Every time that we had our workshops is very fun because we can experience the things
that we can’t do or perform in school. Every day we have different learnings and we can
apply in our future practice. Sports Vision was very fun because we can do exercise which
helps us to focus in one task or do a multi tasking activities.
We are very fortunate and grateful especially to Dr. Maia and Dr. Charlie for helping us
gained new knowledge when it comes to sports vison, rehabilitation, neuro-optometry and
pediatric patients.
To sum up my internship here in VSI was very happy and exciting because every
day we have different learnings.
Clarisse
Dr. Maia gave us a lecture that I learned a lot and I know that in the near future I
will used it as a guide and learnings or experience in my future patients. In the afteroon
session, we get to try and experience all the devices used in handling rehab, pediatric
patients with the help of Sir Mark. He wants us to try all of it so that we will
know/experience the patients and examiner perspective. It was fun because it was my first
time to experience and to asses such things we learned.
I learned several things throughtout this training we had at VSI. Things that will help
me in the near future on how to handle patients in different fields and help me grow as a
person as well. It introduced me to what I am likely to face in my optometry career. I am so
grateful to have reached these conclusions so early in my life, I know it will make me more
successful as an Optometrist.
Special thanks to VSI family especially Dr. Mario, who gave me such an inspiration to
continue my career and to Dr. Maia because I can see myself in her.
Ana
In Vision Science Institute, I learned a lot about how Optometrist can really help change
lives of our patients and how they handle well their patients in different cases like the Athletes,
Strabismus, Stroke Patient and Amblyopia. Dr. Maia Uy and Dr. Charlie Ho opened our minds
and gave us the idea that after graduating Optometry course, we don’t need to stop or to stay
in the commercial area for selling and do refraction only, but they encouraged us to widen and
to embrace our own field of practice.
Here in the VSI, they help you 100% to assess the root of the vision problem and give the best
visual care to the patient to attain a 20/20 visual acuity, to attain straight aligned eyes, and
have the child be more active in school performance. The VSI is very helpful in patient needs.
They offer the best visual assessment and in visual rehabilitation.
Melody
VSI provides optometry interns exposure to various specialty areas in
optometry like neuro-optometric rehabilitation, pediatric optometry, sports vision,
low vision and vision therapy.
They introduced us to their instruments and equipment used by the athletes
in enhancing their visual skills in sports.
Being an intern at VSI showed me how an optometrist can be or what could
be my future work setting. I learned that being an optometrist is not just examining
the eyes to detect if there's refractive error. But being an optometrist is also a career
that offers a wide range of options for specialization.
Bianca
In Vision Science Institute I have learned a lot of things. I have learned different instruments
that can be used for vision therapy and sports vision training and we also got the chance to try
those instruments.
I also encountered case presentations, specially the patients that undergone vision therapy and
seen that after vision therapy the impact on their daily lives and the performance in their
school becomes more efficient and accurate. Also helps them to build their confidence most
specially for patients with Strabismus.
The last thing I learned is when a patient personally talks to us and shares his journey regarding
his condition that he suffered from hemorrhagic stroke for 8 hours and how he and his wife
survived the battle. That moment I realized that God’s miracle is everywhere and one of them is
in front of me and it is like giving me signs that this is my calling to become one of God’s
instrument so God can use us to give hope to other people Just like Dr. Charlie and Dr. Maia.
Cliff
So far of all the sites I was in this site was the best and I can say I loved the most.
Dr. Ho and Dr. Uy made me realized that we can do so much more than improving sight
alone. Neuro-optometry is truly a vast sub-specialization in the field of optometry before
I was so drawn to contact lens since its mechanism was truly mesmerizing as how it
works and how it was designed but upon learning that they even handle stroke patients
and was able to relate vision to all body starting from visual integration, visual
information processing, sensory integration and motor response. This flow shows that
everything starts in vision since learning was highly dependent on what you see and
how your brain interprets it. Human brain is indeed the core of everything eye
misalignment are always associated to it’s not a simple under-action or over-action of a
certain eye muscles. Any changes in biochemical and structural changes for whatever
reason may have a manifestation in different organs that may alter the physiology.
June
I was amazed in the technology and innovation offered by Vision Science Institute.
The Vision Science Institute gives several services including visual rehabilitation and sports
vision. During the first week, we mostly tackled about sports vision. Dr. Charlie Ho
discussed what sports vision is, what the goal is, and what services it provides. I learned
that giving only the 20/20 vision of the patient isn’t enough for an athlete. They need a
higher level of focus thus accommodation and stereopsis are also needed. We also tackled
about how vision therapy helps people with visual problems.
Mostly our duty is composed of lectures about vision therapy and sports vision and
in the afternoon are workshops and exercises, some of the exercises require vigorous
training. Overall, most of my experience here in the Vision Science Institute enabled me to
see that Optometrist are not only shackled to refraction and dispensing lenses. We can do
more than meets the eye.
John
Vision Science Institute was indeed full of learnings. I was amazed by how Dr.
Charlie Ho showed his dedication and his passion about their profession which is
Optometry. Dr. Charlie Ho stated that the scope of practice of Optometry should not and is
not limited to refraction only but instead dealing with the other aspects that we can
provide help with such as sports vision, binocular vision, behavioral optometry, and neuro-
optometric rehabilitation.
Dr. Charlie Ho together with Dr. Maia Uy provided a lecture for us which not just
refreshed our learnings that we already instilled in ourselves but truly as well provided
additional learnings that we should keep in our mind. They also showed us some cases that
they handled in Vision Science Institute especially in sports vision therapy including some
elite athlete which is known in local and international levels as well.
Ma. Angelina
I have always wanted to be part of this clinical optometric standard duty in Vision
Science Institute since before and I’m glad that it happened already. This is my time
where I should not only practice my future profession but to assess myself about the big
responsibilities that I will be having soon.
At VSI, I learned that in Vision therapy, it provides patients with the right
opportunity to develop new neurological pathways relating to the control of the eyes.
Developing new pathways is helpful when it comes to perceiving and processing
incoming information. Vision therapy can help with reading comprehension, reading
speed, attention deficit disorders related to vision conditions, hand eye coordination,
balance and brain injury rehabilitation.
It was a fun experience as expected. I promise myself that I will join again
because I find it very satisfying and this memory will give me so much happiness in my
optometry journey.
Jessica
The doctors and staff of Vision Science Institute have been very accommodating,
nurturing and treated us very well. I have learned a lot regarding the ways an Optometrist
could change lives. As Doctor Maia said, the best investment we could do is to invest in
ourselves. Doctor Charlie Ho also served as a great inspiration to us since he have started
Sports Vision Center by himself. It was indeed a great opportunity for us to meet the people
who have made a great impact in our profession.
This internship helped us integrate the optometric knowledge gained during our
study. With these programs, it will help us develop and improve the clinical skills necessary
to practice optometry and serve our patients in a safe and satisfactory way.
Christlyn
Dr. Charlie and Dr. Maia introduced to us the importance of Sports Vision that enhance
skills and learning by training the eye and the brain, not just for athletes but also in all aspect of
specialization in optometry, for Low Vision, Developmental and Neuro-optometry.
VSI taught us how Optometrists can give 3 things that will help athletes, one is see
clearly which is sight, think better by the vision and perform faster by the training of visual
motor and sensory and learned the process of neuroplasticity.
Vision Science Institute is one of my most unforgettable internship site because of
experienced and knowledge that I gained and will enhance my future practice and apply
everything I learned in VSI and also to help patients and give the best management and
treatment that will change their lives and achieved their dreams because of better Vision.
